Barcelona Song Festival’s 17th Edition Kicks Off this July

The Barcelona Song Festival has announced its 17th edition, which will be dedicated to the “Study of the History and Interpretation of the Art of Latin American and Iberian Song.”

In sum, there will be eight concerts, both live and streaming. For the purposes of this article, our focus will be on vocal performances.

The Barcelona Song Festival opens with a tribute to the Colombian Jaime León, one of the most important Pan-American composers of the 20th century. The recital “La Casa del Lucero” will feature soprano Patricia Caicedo and pianist Manuel Ruíz.

“Recomendaçao” is a program of songs by Brazilian composers featuring mezzo-soprano Poliana Alves, pianist Thiago de Freitas (both from Minas Gerais), as well as soprano Juliana Starling and harpist Soledad Yaya in Sao Paulo.

Tenor Isai Jess Muñoz and pianist Oksana Glouchko will join forces for “Visca l’Amor,” a concert feautirng music by Toldrà, de Grignon, Bonet, Dencausse, Fábregas, and Comelias.

“Marchita El Alma” will be a recital-conference dedicated to the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. Mexican mezzo-soprano Daniela Cortés and the pianist Manuel Ruíz will perform. The showcase will also feature speaker Dr. Enid Negrete, the president of the Fundación Arte Contra la Violencia, an organization that supports low-income artists.

Performance Date: July 14, 2021.

For the final concerts, professional singers from the United States, Colombia, and Mexico, all participants of the course, have joined. First up will be the American singers, with interpreters from different parts of the country. This first concert is known as the “Ambassadors Concert.”

Next up will be “El Goig de Cantar” featuring participants of the Barcelona Festival Song 2021.

Performance Date: July 16, 2021

The final performance of the festival will be “Cants de l’Anima” starring Annabella Capaccio, Arabella Vera, Asael Cuesta, Diana Carreón, Katie McCullough, Ivanna Vargas, Stephanie Monteiro, and Yayra Sánchez.
