Atlanta Opera Announces 96-Hour Opera Project Finalists
By Afton WootenFive composer and librettist teams have been selected to participate in Atlanta Opera’s second annual 96-Hour Opera Project.
Composer Jorge Sosa and librettist Alejandra Martinez, Omar Najmi and Catherine Yu, Dave Ragland and Selda Sahin, Edward Shilts and Laura Barati, and Nathan Felix and Anita Gonzalez make up the creative teams.
The composition competition and showcase is designed for BIPOC artists. The teams are charged with writing ten-minute operas where their creations will be rehearsed and workshopped June 9 – 12.
A panel of judges will evaluate the final showcase on June 12 at Moorehouse College. The winning team a $10,000 prize as well as an Atlanta Opera commission for a new work to be produced and performed in an upcoming season. All participating artists are guaranteed $1,000 for their work.
The final showcase will be free and open to the public.
