Aspen Music Festival and School Announces ’25 Season: ‘Concerning the Spiritual in Art’
By Logan MartellAspen Music Festival and School has announced its 2025 season of performances, titled “Concerning the Spiritual in Art.'”Drawing inspiration from the Kandinsky novel of the same name, the season is set to feature nearly 200 public events which explore a number of spiritual and personal themes.
Here is a breakdown of the classical vocal performances on offer.
Renowned soprano Renee Fleming is set to make her directorial debut with a new production of Mozart’s comic “Cosi fan tutte.” Featuring students of Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS, the work will be set in a high school in Yarmouth, Massachusetts during the 1980s. Co-Artistic Director Patrick Summers will conduct.
“’Cosi fan tutte’ poses dramaturgical challenges today, beginning with the title,” explains Fleming in a press release. “However, universal truths remain, and Mozart’s glorious music guides the way. I’ll be presenting his opera as a coming-of-age scenario in Yarmouth, MA, at the beginning of the wrestling craze.”
Performance Dates: July 21, 23, & 26, 2025.
The festival will also include the world premiere of Christopher Theofanidis and Melissa Studdard’s “Siddhartha, She.” This new work is described as a ritual music drama in seven tableaux which presents a gender-swapped take on Herman Hesse’s 1922 novel of the same name. Conductor Robert Spano will lead the Aspen Festival Orchestra, along with Joel Rinsema’s Kantorei chorus.
The cast will include sopranos Caitlyn Lynch and Maya Kherani, mezzos Kelley O’Connor and Tamara Mumford, countertenor Key’mon Murrah, and baritone Nmon Ford. “The creative team has felt this work in a deeply personal and transformative way,” says Theofanidis. “The character of Siddhartha represents each of our own personal journeys in art and spirit over a lifetime. The origin of this piece goes back 20 years for me and involves my closest friends and lifetime collaborators.”
