Opera Parallèle & San Francisco Transgender District to Present ‘EXPANSIVE’
By Afton MarkayOpera Parallèle and the San Francisco Transgender District team up to present the 5th annual “EXPANSIVE” concert, showcasing transgender and nonbinary singing artists, as part of the statewide Transgender History Month.
This year, the concert’s theme is “Revolution is Just the Beginning,” in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Compton Cafeteria Riot of 1966. The concert features bass-baritone Sapphira Cristál, tenor Katherine Goforth, mezzo-soprano Nina Jones, pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi, and host Afrika America.
Goforth was invited by Opera Parallèle’s Founder and Artistic Director Nicole Paiement to curate anniversary program. Her musical selections and a spoken word narrative are divided into four thematic selections: “We Had Nowhere to Go;” “It Ain’t a Party;” “One at a Time;” and “Still Fighting.” The contrasting musical works will span the genres of opera, classical art song, spirituals, musical theater, and popular songs including Samuel Barber’s “Solitary Hotel,” Andre Previn’s “I Want Magic,” Schubert’s “Der Wanderer,” and Flaherty and Ahrens’ “Make Them Hear You,” among others underscoring the narrative of the 1966 civil disturbance and social justice reaction.
“EXPANSIVE” will be held Aug. 27 at 7.30 pm at A.C.T.’s Strand Theatre.
