‘Ashes & Snow’ To World Premiere At Pittsburgh Opera

By Francisco Salazar
The Pittsburgh Opera has announced its second world premiere in two years.
The company will present “Ashes & Snow” composed by Douglas J. Cuomo and directed by Jonathan Moore in February 2018. The opera will premiere at Pittsburgh Opera’s historic headquarters in Pittsburgh’s Strip District.
The opera is based on Wilhelm Müller’s 24-poem cycle which was used as the text for Franz Schubert’s famous “Winterreise” and will be a single dramatic monologue sung by Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist tenor Eric Ferring.
Ferring will be accompanied by three on-stage musicians, led from the piano by Pittsburgh Opera Director of Musical Studies Mark Trawka as well as a trumpet, an electric guitar played by the composer himself, and electronic sound effects. It will be an opera in the style of 21st-century song infused with acid jazz and punk energy.
“Ashes & Snow” is being developed in partnership with American Opera Projects (AOP) and is set to be presented four times making its world premiere on Feb. 17, 2018.
