Arizona Opera to Adapt ‘Carmen’ into Graphic Novel

By David Salazar

Arizona Opera is set to adapt a graphic novel of Bizet’s “Carmen” on Kickstarter.

The graphic novel adaptation will be written by Alek Shrader and illustrated by artist P. Craig Russell and Aneke. It will also be lettered by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

“It’s a thrill for Arizona Opera to share the work of this remarkable team of artists through the graphic novel format and the timeless story of ‘Carmen,’” said Joseph Specter, Arizona Opera’s President and General Director, in a press statement. “Throughout the pandemic, our company has constantly pursued novel approaches to connecting people through opera, when people need art and meaning the most. ‘CARMEN: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL’ represents an amazing opportunity to extend that focus on innovation, impact, and community.”

The company has also commissioned several artists, including Marguerite Sauvage, Erica Henderson, Colleen Doran, Natacha Bustos, Erica d’Urso, Ana Mirallès, and Marissa Louise, to create Kickstarter-exclusive prints to celebrate the opera.

The kickstarter goal has a goal of $20,000 and, as of this writing, has over $13,000.
