
Aquiles Machado to Leave Amigos de la Ópera de A Coruña
By Francisco SalazarAquiles Machado has announced he is leaving his position as Artistic Director of the Amigos de la Ópera de A Coruña.
Machado will leave at the end of the 2026 season. Machado began his tenure in 2022 and throughout the last years has been responsible for the programming of the seasons.
During his time as Artistic Director, Machado has seen the audience grow with close to 50,000 spectators and has maintained such programs as the “Curso de Interpretación Vocal,” which featured the participation of such luminarie as Fiorenza Cedolins, Mariella Devia, and Carlos Álvarez.
The company also announced that in 2027, José Luis Jiménez will succeed Machado as Artistic Director and Hugo Álvarez as part of the direction. Jiménez has collaborated with Ópera Actual, Scherzo, and as part of the jury of the Premios Opera XXI. He is the author of the Gregory Kunde biography. Álvarez is a philosopher and has worked with Mundoclásico, Ópera Actual, Primer Acto, Artezblai, and Revista de la Asociación de Directores de Escena de España.
