Anthony Roth Costanzo To Perform ‘Messiah’ With NY Phil Tonight

Anthony Roth Costanzo has stepped into tonight’s performance the “Messiah” with the New York Philharmonic, replacing countertenor Iestyn Davies, who is ill.

Costanzo joins a cast of singers that include tenor Joshua Ellicott, bass-baritone Dashon Burton, and soprano Louise Alder. Harry Bicket conducts the performance, which also features the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus under the direction of Harry Christophers.

Costanzo is coming off a massive year that included an famed turn in the Met Opera’s production of “Akhnaten.” In 2020, he will appear in “Rodelinda” at the Theater an der Wien and Los Angeles Opera. He will also perform in “Aci, Galatea and Polifemo” with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in San Francisco.

Per the New York Philharmonic’s official website, Davies is still expected to perform the remaining showcases between Dec. 18-21, 2019.
