The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts announced the return of the American Songbook series with a new season curated by producer, creative director, and Lincoln Center Artist-in-Residence Clint Ramos.
“Echoes of an Inheritance” brings legendary performers and musical pieces of the past into conversation with the bold voices of today, exploring the American music canon and its ever-evolving influence on contemporary society. The community-oriented line up features a mix of classical performances, karaoke, musical theater, and a dance party.
Countertenors Anthony Roth Costanzo and Kangmin Justin Kim join DJ Lina Bradford star in “Diva Factory.” Together they present a one part concert, one part ritual, and total dance party that aims to dismantles the boundaries of both rarefied and populist art, bringing the exalted voices of opera directly to the people’s dance floor.
Also representing classical vocal music is GRAMMY Award-winning producer, composer, and choir master Donald Lawrence. He will lead an ensemble of singers and musicians in a concert of gospel music focusing on collective struggle, joy, and heritage.
“Every program in this season starts with an inherited idea, whether an iconic work, sound, or musical tradition, and interprets it in a new light. This year, we are looking at the American songbook as a question, rather than a menu,” said Ramos in a press release.
The series takes places across three halls on the Lincoln Center campus, from March 18 – May 23.
