A number of performances featuring soprano Anna Netrebko have been canceled.

The soprano has withdrawn from “Adriana Lecouvreur” at La Scala stating that while she is well, she is not going to Milan. Her husband Yusif Eyvazov has also withdrawn from the production.

She has also withdrawn from performances of “Macbeth” at the Opernhaus Zürich. In a statement from the company, Intendant Andreas Homoki noted that while Netrebko released a statement condemning the war, “she came to the conclusion that, in light of the current situation, she would prefer not to sing the performances in Zürich.” Netrebko reportedly told the company that she would be taking a step back from performing for the moment. The company will be replacing Netrebko with Veronika Dzhioeva for the March 26 and 29 performances.

Meanwhile, over at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Artistic Director Serge Dorny stated that “Due to Russia’s terrible war of aggression on Ukraine and a lack of sufficient distancing of Valery Gergijev and Anna Netrebko, the Bayerische Staatsoper will cancel the existing engagements.”

Netrebko released a statement over the weekend noting that she condemned the war. However she also stated that she felt it wrong to be forced into a statement against her country. Netrebko has been a noted Putin supporter throughout her career.
