Anna Netrebko, Renée Fleming, Sonya Yoncheva, Anita Rachvelishvili & Lise Davidsen Headline Berlin Philharmonic’s 2021-22 Season

The Berlin Philharmonic has announced its 2021-22 season, spotlighting some of the world’s greatest performers. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on vocal works.

Here is the full slate:

The Bundesjugendchor presents works by Brahms, Schumann, di Laso, Harvey, Rihm, and Denner. Anne Kohler is the Chorus Master.

Performance Date: August. 28, 2021

Renée Fleming performs Olivier Messiaen’s “Poèmes pour Mi” alongside Daniel Harding and the Concertgebouworkest.

Performance Date: August. 31, 2021

Alto Helena Rasker will present the world premiere of Cathy Milliken’s “Night Shift – The Rehearsal” alongside the Neuer Kammerchor Berlin. Catherine Larsen-Maguire conducts the Ensemble Modern.

Mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg will sing Händel‘s “Donna, che in ciel di tanta luce splendi” alongside the Monteverdi Choir. The Monteverdi Choir and English baroque soloists will present Händel’s “Dixit Dominus” and Bach’s “Christ Lag in Todes Banden.” Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts.

Soprano Anna Prohaska performs works by John Tavener, Franz Tunder, Georg Friedrich Händel, Jörg Widmann, and Wolfgang Rihm. Francesco Corti plays the harpsichord and organ, while Nicolas Altstaedt plays the cello.

Baritone Georg Nigl presents Stravinsky‘s “Abraham and Isaak” alongside conductor Vladimir Jurowski and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.

Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem” will see soloists Dorothee Mields and baritone Krešimir Stražanac take on the famed piece. The program will also include choral works by Anton Bruckner. Philippe Herreweghe conducts the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and Collegium Vocale Gent.

Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená sings Ondřej Adámek’s Song cycle for mezzo-soprano and orchestra “Where are you?” alongside Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Performances of Don Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa’s “Madrigali a cinque voci” spotlight soprano Miriam Allan, mezzo-soprano Barbora Kabátková, alto/countertenor Marine Fribourg, tenors Benedict Hymas and Tore Tom Denys, and bass Jimmy Holliday. Philippe Herreweghe conducts the Collegium Vocale Gent.

Soprano Flurina Stucki, tenor Matthew Newlin and baritone Markus Brück perform Benjamin Britten’s “War Requiem” alongside the Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin and Kinderchor der Deutschen Oper Berlin. Sir Donald Runnicles conducts the Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin.

Countertenor Andrew Watts presents the world premiere of Olga Neuwirth’s Musical Calligrams in memoriam Hester Diamond for Countertenor, Children’s Choir and Orchestra “Keyframes for a Hippogriff” alongside the Kinderchor der Staatsoper Berlin. Jakub Hrůša conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker.

François-Xavier Roth conducts Les Siècles and tenor and baritone soloists yet to be announced in the performance of Igor Stravinsky’s “Canticum sacrum ad honorem Sancti Marci nominis.” Isabelle Faust plays the violin, while Gijs Leenaars conducts the Rundfunkchor Berlin.

The RIAS Kammerchor Berlin and the soloists of the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin perform choral works by William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Don Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa, and Igor Stravinsky. Justin Doyle conducts the Kammerakademie Potsdam.

Alto Catriona Morison and bass Matthias Winckhler perform works by Igor Stravinsky alongside the Rundfunkchor Berlin. Robin Ticciati conducts the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.

A concert performance of Tchaikovsky‘s opera “Mazeppa” will showcase Vladislav Sulimsky, Olga Peretyatko, Dimitry Ivashchenko, Vitalij Kowaljow, Oksana Volkova, Dmitry Golovnin, Alexander Kravets, and Anton Rositskiy. Kirill Petrenko conducts.

Soprano Chen Reiss sings Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 alongside conductor Semyon Bychkov.

Soprano Nadine Sierra and mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa sing Mahler‘s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” alongside the Rundfunkchor Berlin. Gustavo Dudamel conducts.

Mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre performs works by Francesco Provenzale, Giovanni Buonaventura Viviani, François-André Philidor, André-Cardinal Destouches, François Couperin, Marin Marais, Antonio Vivaldi, Giuseppe de Bottis, and Georg Caspar Schürmann. Jupiter-Ensemble accompanies, while Thomas Dunford plays the lute.

Soprano Hana Blažíková performs a rich program by Johann Sebastian Bach. Václav Luks conducts the Collegium 1704.

Baritone Benjamin Appl performs Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s “Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Stand,” Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach’s “Pygmalion,” and Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Ich habe genug” alongside oboist Christoph Hartmann and the Berliner Barock Solisten.

Soprano Rachel Redmond, tenor James Way, and bass Sreten Manojlović present Georg Friedrich Händel’s “L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato.” William Christie conducts Les Arts Florissants.

Soprano Elena Stikhina, mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, tenor Fabio Sartori and bass René Pape perform Verdi’s “Messa di Requiem” alongside the Rundfunkchor Berlin. Daniel Barenboim conducts.

Soprano Lucy Crowe, mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg, and tenor Werner Güra sing Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Symphony No. 2 “Lobgesang” alongside the Monteverdi Choir. Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts.

Performance Dates: March 17 – 19, 2022

Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” is set to star tenor Arsen Soghomonyan as Hermann and soprano Asmik Grigorian as Lisa. The cast also includes Boris Pinkhasovich as Yeletsky, Vladislav Sulimsky as Tomsky, Aigul Akhmetshina as Polina, and Doris Soffel as the Countess. Kirill Petrenko conducts a production by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier. The final two performances will be in a concert version.

Mezzo-soprano Anna Lapkovskaja presents works by Igor Stravinsky alongside Sir Simon Rattle.
