Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Juan Diego Flórez, Marina Rebeka, Anita Rachvelishvili Lead Wiener Konzerthaus 2021-22 Season

The Wiener Konzerthaus has announced its 2021-22 season featuring a variety of concerts from some of the world’s greatest performers.

For the purpose of this article, we will only focus on the vocal works.

Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov will open the season alongside conductor Michelangelo Mazza.

Performance Date: Sept. 7, 2021

Juan Diego Flórez will perform works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Strauss, Vincenzo Bellini, Giuseppe Verdi, Edouard Lalo, Jules Massenet, and Giacomo Puccini. Vincenzo Scalera will be at the piano.

Performance Date: Sept. 8, 2021

Tenor Michael Schade will present works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Joseph von Eichendorff, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Eduard Mörike, Hugo Wolf, Else Lasker-Schüler, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Joseph Marx, Franz Werfel, Alexander Zemlinsky, Franz Werfel, and Siegfried Fürst. Justus Zeyen will be at the piano.

Performance Date: Sept. 10, 2021

Sabine Devieilhe and Alexandre Tharaud will perform lied by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Gabriel Fauré and Francis Poulenc.

Performance Date: Sept. 18, 2021

The performance of Mahler‘s Symphony No. 3 will showcase mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly. Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, 2021

Tenor Benjamin Bernheim will present lied by Robert Schumann, Ernest Chausson, and Francis Poulenc alongside pianist Carrie-Ann Matheson.

Performance Date: Oct. 3, 2021

Soprano Simone Schneider will perform Bernstein‘s Symphony No. 3 “Kaddish.” Marin Alsop conducts.

Performance Date: Oct. 8, 2021

Mezzo-soprano Anja Mittermüller will present works by Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Luigi Boccherini, and César Franck.

Performance Date: Oct. 11, 2021

Bass Florian Boesch will present lied by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann alongside pianist Alexander Lonquich. The performance also spotlights the Artemis Quartett.

Monteverdi‘s “Orfeo” will be performed in concert starring Rolando Villazón in the title role, Céline Scheen, Luciana Mancini, Anne-Kathryn Olsen, Lila Hajosi, Benedetta Mazzucato, Vinzenco Capezzuto, Aidan Coburn, Krystian Adam, Zachary Wilder, John Taylor Ward, Benoît Arnould, and Dingle Yandell. Christina Pluhar conducts.

Performance Date: Nov. 1, 2021

Mezzo-soprano Christa Mayer will perform Alexander Zemlinsky’s “Sechs Gesänge” with the Wiener Symphoniker. Omer Meir Wellber conducts.

Gerald Finley presents lied by Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf alongside pianist Julius Drake.

Raphaël Pichon conducts Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem” with Mari Eriskmoen and Andrè Schuen.

Performance Date: Nov. 18, 2021

Kantorenkonzert: Meafela Leora” will spotlight tenor Shmuel Barzilai and Chor der Großen Synagoge Jerusalem. Elli Jaffe conducts.

Performance Date: Nov. 23, 2021

Baritone Christian Gerhaher and soprano Johanna Wallroth will perform Antonín Dvořák’s “Zehn biblische Lieder” and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Daniel Harding conducts the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Performance Date: Nov. 27, 2021

Bass-baritone Philipp Schöllhorn and mezzo-soprano Therese Troyer will perform works by Georg Friedrich Händel, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Hugo Wolf, and Gioachino Rossini.

Thomas Hampson performs lied by Charles Ives and Gustav Mahler. Bas Wiegers conducts.

Performance Date: Dec. 3, 2021

Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Weihnachtsoratorium” BWV 248 will spotlight soprano Isabel Schicketanz, mezzo-soprano Marie Henriette Reinhold, tenor Patrick Grahl, and bass Matthias Winckhler. Hans-Christoph Rademann conducts.

Tenor Peter Leussink and Nicolas Radulescu will perform a concert at the Mozart-Saal.

The event “Ein Abend im Advent mit Peter Simonischek” showcases counter-tenor Alois Mühlbacher.

Sonya Yoncheva will perform songs by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Francesco Paolo Tosti and Giuseppe Martucci alongside pianist Malcolm Martineau.

The gala “Christmas in Vienna” stars soprano Marina Rebeka, mezzo-soprano Margarita Gritskova, tenor Lawrence Brownlee, and bass-baritone Adam Plachetka. Sascha Goetzel conducts.

Jonas Kaufmann will perform alongside conductor Jochen Rieder and Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 “Choral” will spotlight soprano Anu Komsi, mezzo-soprano Tuija Knihtilä, tenor Diego Godoy, and baritone Christian Senn. Sakari Oramo conducts the Wiener Symphoniker and Wiener Singakademie.

Sopranos Simona Šaturová and Vera-Lotte Boecker, tenor Maximilian Schmitt, and bass Tareq Nazmi will perform works by Ludwig van Beethoven. Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts the Wiener Symphoniker and Wiener Singakademie.

Lise Davidsen performs works by Edvard Grieg, Richard Strauss, and Richard Wagner alongside pianist Leif Ove Andsnes.

Soprano Ana Quintans, counter-tenor Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian, tenor Cyril Auvity, and baritones Marc Mauillon and Virgile Ancely will perform works by Henry Purcell and Jean-Baptiste Lully. Vincent Dumestre conducts.

Christina Landshamer and alto Wiebke Lehmkuhl sing Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 alongside conductor Jakub Hrůša and the Bamberger Symphoniker – Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie.

Baritone Holger Falk will perform alongside conductor Patrick Hahn.

Soprano Andrea Carroll performs works by Johannes Maria Staud and Richard Strauss. Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts the Wiener Symphoniker.

MusicAeterna Orchestra & Choir will present Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. Soprano and alto soloists will be announced at a later date. Teodor Currentzis conducts.

Oksana Lyniv leads the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien in Dvořák’s “Requiem.” The concert will star soprano Simona Šaturová, alto Gerhild Romberger, tenor Maximilian Schmitt, and bass Jongmin Park.

Performance Date: Feb. 23, 2022

Soprano Miriam Feuersinger, alto Margot Oitzinger, tenor Daniel Johannsen, and baritone Manuel Walser will present Bach’s cantatas. Rudolf Lutz conducts the Chor & Orchester der J. S. Bach-Stiftung.

Performance Date: Feb. 25, 2022

Baritone Matthias Goerne will perform lieder by Robert Schumann alongside pianist Markus Hinterhäuser.

Performance Date: March 1, 2022

Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff will perform with the Wiener Symphoniker. Constantinos Carydis conducts.

Sir Simon Keenlyside will perform lieder by Henry Purcell, Gerald Raphael Finzi, and Ralph Vaughan Williams alongside pianist Malcolm Martineau.

Mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn and baritone Mark Stone present works by Alban Berg and Leoš Janáček. Thomas Adès conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker.

Soprano Katharina Konradi performs works by Franz Schubert alongside pianist Malcolm Martineau.

The performance of Bach’s “St Matthew Passion” will showcase Reinoud Van Mechelen, Florian Boesch, Dorothee Mields, Grace Davidson, Tim Mead, James Hall, Samuel Boden, Guy Cutting, Jonathon Adams, and Tobias Berndt. Philippe Herreweghe conducts the Collegium Vocale Gent.

MusicAeterna byzantina and musicAeterna Choir will present works by Hildegard von Bingen, Guillaume de Machaut, Gregorio Allegri, and György Ligeti. Teodor Currentzis conducts.
