Anna Netrebko, Javier Camarena, Sonya Yoncheva & Sondra Radvanovsky Highlight Gran Teatre del Liceu’s 2021-22 Season

Opera
The first opera of the season is set to be Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” starring Iréne Theorin and Johanni van Oostrum sharing the title role. They will be accompanied by Samantha Hankey, Paula Murrihy, Nikolai Schukoff, Brandon Jovanovich, Elena Sancho Pereg, Sara Blanch, and Benjamin Appl. Katie Mitchell directs with Josep Pons conducting.

Mark Padmore, Matthias Goerne, and Tatiana Pavlovskaya star in Britten’s “War Requiem” with Josep Pons conducting.

René Jacobs conducts Telemann’s “Orpheus” with Kateryna Kasper, Mirella Hagen, David Fischer, Salomé Haller, Christian Immler, and Benno Schachtner.

Daniele Callegari conducts a revival of Verdi’s “Rigoletto“ with Benjamin Bernheim, Saimir Pirgu, Josep Bros, Christopher Maltman, Markus Brück, Olga Peretyatko, and Aigul Khismatullin. The cast will also include Grigory Shkarupa and Liang Li as Sparafucile and Nino Sugurladze and Rinat Shahan as Maddalena.

Yusif Eyvazov and Martin Muehle lead Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades“ in a production by Gilbert Deflo. Dmitry Jurowski conducts a cast that includes Lukasz Golinski, Gevorg Hakobyan, Rodion Pogossov, Andrey Zhilikhovsky, Dolora Zajick, Elena Zaremba, Sondra Radvanovsky, Lianna Haroutounian, Lena Belkina, and Cristina Faus.
Performance Dates: Jan. 26-Feb. 11, 2022
William Christie conducts Handel’s “Partenope” in a concert performance with Ana Vieira Leita, Hugh Cutting, Alberto Miguélez Rouco, Jacob Lawrence, Helen Charlston, and Matthieu Walendzik.
Performance Date: Jan. 29, 2022
Debussy’s “Pelléas et Mélisande“ is set to star Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Simon Keenlyside, Franz-Josef Selig, Julie Fuchs, and Sarah Connolly. Àlex Ollé directs the new production and Josep Pons conducts.

Da Ponte Trilogy

Ivan Alexandre and Marc Minkowski lead Mozart’s “Don Giovanni“ with a cast that includes Alexandre Duhamel, Leonard Bernad, Iulia Maria Dan, Julien Henric, Arianna Venditelli, Robert Gleadow, Leonard Bernad, Megan Marino, and Angela Brower.
Performance Dates: April 8-24, 2022
The trilogy concludes with Mozart’s “Così Fan Tutte” starring Ana Maria Labin, Angela Brower, Megan Marino, James Ley, Robert Gleadow, Miriam Albano, and Alexandre Duhamel. Marc Minkowski conducts and Ivan Alexandre directs.

Matthias Goerne brings his iconic portrayal of Berg’s “Wozzeck“ in William Kentridge’s production. The cast also includes Torsten Kerl, Peter Tantsits, Mikeldi Atxalandabaso, Peter Rose, Elena Zhidkova, and Rinat Shaham. Josep Pons conducts.

Gustavo Dudamel conducts Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” with a cast that includes Stephen Milling, John Relyea, Javier Camarena, Julien Behr, Matthias Goerne, Kathryn Lewek, Sara Blanch, Lucy Crowe, Núria Rial, Thomas Oliemans, and Joan Martín-Royo. Simon McBurney directs.
Performance Dates: June 20-July 2, 2022
(Oh)pera! is a project launched by the Gran Teatre del Liceu in which four small-format operas will be performed on the same day. Teams of young people selected in cooperation with Barcelona design schools will showcase their work. The operas are composed by Núria Giménez-Comas, Marc Migó, José Río-Pareja, and Fabià Santcovsky.
