Javier Camarena Makes Teatro Real History

By Francisco Salazar

Javier Camarena has made history once more at the Teatro Real de Madrid.

The tenor sang the fourth encore in the history of the company since it’s reopening in 1997 during “Una Furtiva Lagrima” in a performance of Donizetti’s “L’ELisir d’Amore.”

It’s the third encore the tenor gives at the Teatro Real following the bis during the HD of “Lucia di Lammermoor” in the summer of 2018 and during performances of Donizetti’s “La Fille du Regiment” in 2014.

Camarena made history earlier this year becoming the first soloist to give an encore during an HD performance at the Metropolitan Opera and  also made history at the Royal Opera encoring every performance of “La Fille du Regiment.” He also gave an encore during a run of “I Puritani” at the Liceu in Barcelona in 2018. At the Met he has given encores during runs of “La Cenerentola” and “Don Pasquale.”

Camarena next sings “Il Pirata” at the Teatro Real alongside Sonya Yoncheva.
