Anita Rachvelishvili, Lise Davidsen & Malin Byström Lead Philharmonia Orchestra’s 2020-21 Season
By Francisco SalazarThe Philharmonia Orchestra has announced its 2020-21 season featuring internationally acclaimed guest soloists and recognized conductors.
For the purposes of this article, we will only focus on vocal performances.
Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Yuja Wang and the Philharmonia Voices in Beethoven’s “The Creatures of Prometheus” and Scriabin’s Prometheus: The Poem of Fire.
Perfomance Date: Sept. 24, 2020
The Philharmonia Orchestra presents Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with conductor John Wilson leading Božidar Smiljanić and the Philharmonia Voices. The concert will also showcase pianist Louis Schwizgebel in Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G.
Performance Date: Nov. 5, 2020
Julia Doyle, Marta Fontanals-Simmons, Nicky Spence, and David Soar star in Handel’s “Messiah” with Brian Wright conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Performance Date: Dec. 4, 2020
Riccardo Muti Conducts Verdi’s Requiem with soloists Asmik Grigorian, Anita Rachvelishvili, Francesco Meli, and Riccardo Zanellato.
Performance Date: Dec. 10, 2020
Strauss’ “Elektra” gets a concert performance with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting. The cast includes Iréne Theorin, Lise Davidsen, Anna Larsson, Alan Oke, and Peixin Chen baritone.

Ivor Setterfield conducts Handel’s Messiah with Barts Choir.
Performance Dates: March 15, 2021
David Hill conducts Grieg’s Piano Concerto with pianist Ivana Gavrić and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Fflur Wyn, Kitty Whately, Toby Spence, and Neal Davies. The program also includes Mendelssohn’s Overture, The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave).

Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducts Orff’s “Carmina Burana” with Mari Eriksmoen, Brett Sprague, and Marcus Farnsworth. The concert will also include Shostakovich Suite for Variety Orchestra.
Performance Date: March 21, 2021
Juraj Valčuha conducts Markus Werba in Mahler’s “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.” The program will also include the composer’s Symphony No.1.
Performance Date: March 25, 2021
Jakub Hrůša conducts a program entitled Bartók & Strauss: Dances of Desire featuring Malin Byström, Susan Bickley, and Peter Hoare. The program will feature Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin and R. Strauss’s Dance of the Seven Veils and closing scenes from “Salome.”

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Voices in a program entitled Daphnis et Chloé Origin Stories: Greek Myth in Music featuring the music of Rameau and Ravel.
Performance Date: June, 2011
The season ends with Elgar’s “The Dream of Gerontius” with conductor David Hill leading soloists Kitty Whately, Andrew Staples, and Neal Davies.
