The Metropolitan Opera is set to present a new production of Verdi’s “Aida.”

The new production will open on Dec. 31, 2024, and will be directed by Michael Mayer, who has already been in charge of the Met’s productions of “Grounded,” “Rigoletto,” “La Traviata,” and “Marnie.” This will be the first new production of “Aida” on the Met stage in 36 years, replacing the Sonja Frisell production that retired in 2023 after 262 performances.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the opera with Angel Blue in the title role alongside Piotr Beczała, Judit Kutasi, Quinn Kelsey, Morris Robinson, and Dmitry Belosselskiy.

The opera will also star Christina Nilsson, Brian Jagde, Elīna Garanča, Roman Burdenko, Michael Chioldi, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Alexander Vinogradov, and Krzysztof Bączyk in later performances. Alexander Soddy and John Keenan also conduct.

Mayer’s creative team includes Broadway veteran set designer Christine Jones, costume designer Susan Hilferty, lighting designer Kevin Adams, projection design by 59, choreographer Oleg Glushkov in his company debut, and production consultant Stephen Pickover.

“Aida” runs through May 9, 2025 with the Jan. 25 performance transmitted live to movie theaters around the globe as part of the Met’s Live in HD series. The performance will also be broadcast live over The Robert K. Johnson Foundation—Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network. The performances on Dec. 31, Jan. 7 and 25, and May 5 will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on the SiriusXM app.
