The Amsterdam theatre group ITA has ended its relationship with director Ivo van Hove.
The news comes only months after the acclaimed director resigned as artistic director but continued to work in an advisory role. According to reports the reasoning for the theatre group’s decision was due to an “unsafe” situation and “unacceptable behavior.” The group also announced that the supervisory board is also resigning to clear the way for a change in direction.
Van Hove retained his €145,000 salary for his work and had been planning to direct a new performance with the ITA for a prestigious German festival.
The director is not only known for his theatre work, but also for his operatic productions. He has directed at the Metropolitan Opera, Dutch National Opera, Paris Opera, Flemish Opera, La Monnaie, and Teatro Real de Madrid. Regarding his “Don Giovanni” production, Operawire’s David Salazar said, “On the whole, I can’t really think of a production thus far this season that has checked all the boxes. A refreshing take on one of the seminal texts of the art form with a tremendous cast and a top-notch conductor? This ‘Don Giovanni’ has that and so much more. Van Hove’s production is not only worth one experience, but multiple to continue discovering the layers and colors of this most fascinating of operas.”
