American Symphony Orchestra To Present Martinů’s ‘Julietta’ At Carnegie Hall
By Nicole KuchtaThe American Symphony Orchestra will present The Key of Dreams, the New York premiere of Bohuslav Martinů’s opera “Julietta” at Carnegie Hall on Friday, March 22, 2019. This performance will mark the U.S. premiere of the opera’s Czech version, the original libretto written in French.
The three-act opera is based on George Neveaux’s French play “Juliette, ou La clé des songes” (“Juliette, or The Key of Dreams”), and “explores the intersection of dreams and reality,” according to the press release. The psychological drama was first staged at Prague’s National Theatre in 1938.
American soprano Sara Jakubiak will star in the title role, alongside Metropolitan Opera artist and George London Foundation Award recipient tenor Aaron Blake as Michel. Rounding out the cast are tenor David Cangelosi, bass-baritone Alfred Walker, bass Kevin Burdette, mezzo-soprano Rebecca Jo Loeb, bass-baritone Philip Cokorinos, mezzo-soprano Tichina Vaughn, and mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis. James Bagwell will conduct the Bard Festival Chorale, and Music Director and Principal Conductor Leon Botstein will lead the orchestra.
A free (for all ticket holders), 30-minute Conductor’s Notes Q&A will be held in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage prior to the performance.
