
American Lyric Theater to Present Double Bill at Symphony Space
By David SalazarAmerican Lyric Theater will present a double-bill performance on Saturday, May 16, at Symphony Space in New York City.
The afternoon program begins at 3 p.m. with “Ofrenda.” The work, featuring music by Jorge Sosa and libretto by John de los Santos, was commissioned by Austin Opera under the auspices of the Residency for Latinx Creatives centers on Macaria, a hospital custodian who receives the power to heal after a chance encounter with death. The work draws on Día de los Muertos traditions and the mysticism surrounding Mexican curanderas. Kamna Gupta conducts.
The evening program at 7 p.m. features “The Shadow,” with music by Ivette Herryman Rodríguez and libretto by Samuel Norman. Developed through American Lyric Theater’s Composer Librettist Development Program, the opera adapts Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of a man who loses his shadow — and ultimately his grip on identity and reality.
