American Opera Projects & BAM to Present New York Premiere of ‘The Post Office’
By David SalazarAmerican Opera Projects and the Brooklyn Academy of Music will present the New York premiere of “The Post Office” from May 16–21, 2026 at BAM in Brooklyn.
The opera features music by Laura Kaminsky, composer of “As One,” with a libretto by poet Elaine Sexton. The production is directed by Kevin Newbury with set design by Charles Renfro of the distinguished architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The NY premiere features a cast of five singers and piano.
The work draws the ghost of Benjamin Franklin, the first U.S. Postmaster General, into a contemporary conflict among co-workers in a one-room post office, touching on gay marriage, free speech, racial and class divides, and democracy.
The production will also travel to Spruce Peak Arts on May 7–8, 2026 before its BAM run.
