Alice Birch & Tom Coult’s New Opera ‘Violet’ Set for UK Tour

On June 3, 2022, the newest opera to come from playwright Alice Birch and composer Tom Coult, titled “Violet,” is set to premiere with six performances across the U.K.

Originally slated for the canceled 2020 Aldeburgh Festival, “Violet” was developed at Snape Maltings as part of the Jerwood Opera Writing Programme. The works comes in co-production by Britten Pears Arts and Music Theatre Wales, and is staged in association with the London Sinfonietta.

Andrew Gourlay leads the London Sinfonietta and a cast featuring Anna Dennis in the title role, Richard Burkhard, Frances Gregory, and Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks. The creative team includes director Jude Christian, designer Rosie Elnile, and costume designer Cecile Tremolieres.

“Violet” will premiere at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on June 3 and 5, after which the new opera will be performed at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff on June 8; Theatr Clwyd in Mold on June 19; Hackney Empire in London on June 23; and Buxton International Festival on July 18. The London performance will be co-produced and presented by The Royal Opera in association with Hackney Empire.
