Opera on Tap Team Launches Creative Lab FlyRail
By David SalazarFlyRail, Inc., the Brooklyn nonprofit known for 21 years as Opera on Tap, has launched FlyRail.
Opera on Tap continues as FlyRail’s founding brand, with chapters across the U.S. and abroad. Both are programs of FlyRail, Inc. The launch of the new program, an arts and creative technology lab that will house the organization’s new works, technology projects, and STEAM training, will also be accompanied by two new websites including flyrailact.org for FlyRail and a redesigned operaontap.org for Opera on Tap.
“For a while now, the name Opera on Tap hasn’t fully captured that side of our work,” said Annie Hiatt, co-founder, president, and CEO of FlyRail, Inc., per an official press release. “FlyRail gives it, and the artists and technologists who make it, a home of its own, while Opera on Tap keeps growing and doing what it does best: bringing opera to where people already are.”
To open its first season, FlyRail will feature “Looking at You,” the immersive techno-noir music-theatre work by composer Kamala Sankaram and writer Rob Handel, directed by Kristin Marting. The work centers on software engineer Dorothy, who is asked by her ex-boyfriend Ethan, a famous whistleblower, to help upload his consciousness to the cloud. The opera was developed with privacy researchers Alessandro Acquisti of MIT and Ralph Gross of Carnegie Mellon University.
The production, which will star Sishel Claverie as Dorothy, Brandon Snook as Ethan Snyder, Adrienne Danrich as Annina, Paul An as Raj, Eric McKeever as Charlie, and Natalie Trumm as Brooke, is set to run for eight performances from Jan. 15-23, 2027, at HERE.
The production, which will be conducted by Samuel McCoy and features pianist Tanya Gabrielian, then travels to The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College for performances on April 2 and 3, 2027.
The season will then continue with the FlyRail Dome Experience at Purchase College’s inaugural Taproot Festival in April 2027, featuring works by Daniel Shambo and “GammaTime” by Nina Sobell and Ed Bear. Then in fall 2027, the company is set to present “Joan of the City,” a site-specific mixed reality opera by Sankaram about a modern-day Joan of Arc that tells the stories of five unhoused women as told by them. The piece was co-commissioned with San Diego Opera and Opera Omaha and developed in partnership with San Diego Opera and BAM.
Additionally, a Space Opera Maker Camp, in which campers ages 9-15 write, build, and premiere a space opera inside the dome, is also in the works for summer 2027 with Space Kids Global.
