The Berlin Philharmonic has announced that conductor Alan Gilbert has canceled the concert on June 5, 2021 due to COVID-19.

As a result, Sakari Oramo will take over the musical direction. The program for the concert includes Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25, and Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2.

Gilbert contracted COVID-19 at the beginning of April 2021 and had to be hospitalized due to the severity of the symptoms. Around the same time, The Royal Swedish Opera where Gilbert serves as the Music Director had to close after a COVID-19 outbreak.

Gilbert is scheduled to perform a recital with Renée Fleming at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris on Oct. 22, 2021.
