Opera Atelier Unveils 2025-26 Season
By David SalazarOpera Atelier has unveiled its 2025-26 season.
The season opens with “The Magic Flute.” The opera will be sung in English and stars Rainelle Krause as the Queen of the Night, Colin Ainsworth as Tamino, Meghan Lindsay as Pamina, Douglas Williams as Papageno, Stephen Hegedus as Sarastro, Blaise Rantoanina as Monastatos, Karine White as Papagena, and Carla Huhtanen, Danielle MacMillan, and Laura Pudwell as the Three Ladies. David Fallis conducts the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Marshall will direct.
“We’re thrilled to open our season in Toronto’s historic Elgin Theatre with the company’s period production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, part of our 40th anniversary celebrations,” Pynkoski, the company’s Co-artistic Director, said in an official press release. “Opera Atelier’s Magic Flute remains North America’s first and only period production of the Opera and has proven to be a cherished piece of music theatre that appeals to children, adults, first-time opera goers and opera aficionados alike.”
Performance Date: Oct. 15 – 19, 2025
The second half of the season features “Pelléas et Mélisande” in its Toronto premiere. Fallis will conduct and Pynkoski will direct a cast starring tenor Antonin Rondepierre as Pelléas, soprano Meghan Lindsay as Mélisande, bass-baritone Douglas Williams as Golaud, bass-baritone Philippe Sly as Arkel, soprano and Opera Atelier Artist-in-Residence soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee as Geneviève, and mezzo-Soprano Cynthia Akemi-Smithers as Yniold.
“Debussy’s surrealist masterpiece lifts us out of the parameters of life as we know it and projects us into a world in which dreams collide with reality,” added Pynkoski. “While preparing to direct this production of ‘Pelléas,’ I keep in mind the statement by the great late film director David Lynch: ‘I like to leave some room to dream. A lot of mysteries are sewn up at the end. That kills the dream.'”
Performance Date: April 15 – 19, 2026
