The Opéra de Lyon has announced its 2023-24 season.

Opera

The season kicks off with “Die Frau ohne Schatten” in a production by Mariusz Trelinski. Daniele Rustioni conducts a cast starring Sara Jakubiak, Josef Wagner, Ambur Braid, and Vincent Wolfsteiner.

Performance Dates: Oct. 17 – 31, 2023

Daniele Rustioni conducts “Adriana Lecouvreur” with Elena Stikhina in the title role. The opera also stars Maurizio Muraro, Clémentine Margaine, and Brian Jagde.

Performance Dates: Dec. 3, 2023

Constantin Trinks leads Mendelssohn’s “Elias” in a production by Calixto Bieito. The work stars Derek Welton, Kai Rüütel, Robert Lewis, and Beth Taylor, among others.

Performance Dates: Dec. 17, 2023 – Jan. 1, 2024

 Laurent Pelly directs Offenbach’s “Barbe-bleu.” James Henry conducts a cast starring Florian Laconi, Jérémy Courcier, and Héloïse Mas.

Performance Dates: Jan. 24 – Feb. 4, 2024

Daniele Rustioni will conduct “La Fanciula del West” in a production by Barbara Wysocka. Chiara Isotton, Claudio Sgura, and Riccardo Massi headline the cast.

Performance Dates: March 15 – April 2, 2024

Daniele Rusioni conducts “Pique Dame” in a production by Timofeï Kouliabine. The opera will star Najmiddin Mavlyanov, Elena Guseva, Elena Zaremba, Olga Syniakova, and Konstantin Shushakov.

Performance Dates: March 16 – April 3, 2024

Sebastian Rivas’ “Otages” gets a production by Richard Brunel. Rut Schereiner conducts a cast starring Nicola Beller Carbone.

Performance Dates: March 17 – 23, 2024

Johannes Debus conducts Damiano Michieletto’s production of “Béatrice et Bénédict.” Cecilia Molinari and Robert Lewis star in the title roles alongside Giulia Scopelliti, Thandiswa Mpongwana, Pawel Trojak, and Pete Thanapat, among others.

Performance Dates: May 13-24, 2024 

Clément Lonca conducts Jeanne Candel’s production of Krása’s “Brundibár.”

Performance Dates: May 22-25, 2024

Closing out the season will be “The Makropoulos Affair.” Alexander Joel conducts a production by Richard Brunel. The cast stars Ausrine Stundyte, Peter Hoare, Thandiswa Mpongwana, Tómas Tómasson, and Robert Lewis, among others.

Concerts

Jérôme Avenas and pianist Angela White perform Schumann’s “Dichterliebe.” The program also features music by Clara Schumann and dancer Alvaro Dule.

Baritone Pwel Trojak will give a recital.

Performance Dates: Nov. 19, 2023

There will be “Soirée de Gala.”

Performance Dates: Nov. 23, 2023

Nicole Car will sing Beethoven’s “Ah! Perfido!” The concert will also feature the composer’s third symphony and overture to “Egmont.” Kent Nagano conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 26, 2023

There will be a holiday concert featuring the Maîtrise and Orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon.

 Soprano Giulia Scopelliti and tenor Robert Lewis will headline a New Year’s Eve concert featuring music by Liszt and Kálmán. Constantin Trinks conducts.

Tenor Robert Lewis and pianist Gregory Ballesteros will perform in recital.

Mezzo-soprano Thandiswa Mpongwana will give a recital.
