Jonas Kaufmann, Jessica Pratt, Ermonela Jaho & Ferruccio Furlanetto Lead Opera Australia’s 2023 Season

Opera Australia has announced its 2023 season which will mark the 13th and final season of Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini’s tenure.

Sydney Summer

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will be conducted by Guillaume Tourniaire in Sir David McVicar’s production. The opera will star Ukranian baritone Andrei Kymach in the titular role, Israeli bass Yuri Kissin as Leporello, and Sophie Salvesani as Donna Anna. The production will also include Sydney Winter, Celeste Lazarenko, Juan de Dios Mateos, Bronwyn Douglass, Jane Ede, Cathy-Di Zhang, Andrew Williams, and David Parkin.

Performance Dates: Jan. 5-18, 2023

Puccini’s “La Bohème” will be conducted by Michelangelo Mazza and will be directed by Gale Edwards. Karah Son, Iván Ayón Rivas, Atalla Ayan, Julie Lea Goodwin, Esther Song, Haotian Qi, Alexander Sefton, Shane Lowrencev, and Richard Anderson star.

Performance Dates: Jan. 12-March 11, 2023

Ermonela Jaho sings the title role in Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur” alongside Michael Fabiano as Maurizio, Carmen Topciu as The Principessa and Giorgio Caoduro as Michonnet. Renato Palumbo conducts the production by Rosetta Cucchi.

In Concert

Renato Palumbo conducts Donizetti’s “Roberto Devereux” with Valerio Borgioni, Roberta Mantegna, Giorgio Caoduro, and Agnieszka Rehlis.

Ferruccio Furlanetto and Natalia Sidorenko perform a one-night-only concert showcasing music by Brahms, Mussorgsky, and Rachmaninov along with a variety of recognizable bass arias from “Le Nozze di Figaro,” “Don Giovanni,” “Boris Godunov,” “Don Carlo” and more.

Performance Date: April 27, 2023

Paul Fitzsimon conducts “Chorus!” with Matthew Barclay directing. The concert will explore the vast musical terrain of opera repertoire.

Performance Dates: Feb. 4-March 10, 2023

The Great Opera Hits will be a 90-minute light-hearted concert filled with classics by eminent composers such as Bizet, Mozart, and Verdi. Most of which will be familiar to both opera lovers and newcomers alike.

Sydney Winter

Renato Palumbo conducts Verdi’s “Rigoletto” in Elijah Moshinsky’s production. Italian baritone Ernesto Petti will make his Australian debut in the title role alongside Atalla Ayan, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Stacey Alleaume, and David Parkin.

Performance Dates: June 13-26, 2023

Lorenzo Passerini and Tahu Matheson conduct Verdi’s “Aida” in Davide Livermore’s production. Leah Crocetto stars in the title role opposite Elena Gabouri as Amneris. Najmiddin Mavlyanov will sing Radamès, Roberto Scandiuzzi will sing Ramfis, and Warwick Fyfe will perform Amonasro.

Performance Dates: June 19-July 21, 2023

Andrea Battistoni conducts Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann” in Damiano Michieletto’s production. Superstar soprano Jessica Pratt returns to play all four soprano parts with tenor Iván Ayón Rivas and Marko Mimica.

In Concert

Pinchas Steinberg conducts Ponchielli’s “La Gioconda” with Jonas Kaufmann in his role debut as Enzo Grimaldo, Ludovic Tézier as Barnaba, and Saioa Hernández making her OA debut in the title role of La Gioconda. They will be joined by Agnieszka Rehlis and Vitalij Kowaljow.

Jessica Pratt brings her Mad Scenes concert to Australia with conductor Carlo Montanaro. The concert includes music by Bellini, Verdi, and Donizetti.

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour

Karah Son and Eva Kong share the title role of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” alongside Diego Torre, Thomas Strong, Agnes Sarkis, Sian
Sharp, Michael Honeyman, and Luke Gabbedy.  share the role of Sharpless. Brian Castles-Onion conducts the production by Alex Ollé.

Melbourne Season

Phillip Glass’ “Satyagraha” will be conducted by Tahu Matheson and directed by Andy Morton. Shanul Sharma returns to Australia to perform in a hypnotic and reverent portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi.

Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” will be performed in concert with conductor Asher Fisch. Shane Placentino directs the semi-staged performance will star German tenor Stefan Vinke and American soprano Amber Wagner.

Michael Fabiano makes his Melbourne debut in a recital.

Brisbane Season

Philippe Auguin conducts The Ring Cycle in Chen Shi-Zheng’s production. Daniel Sumegi sings Wotan and Anna-Louise Cole takes on the role of Brünnhilde and will mark the first time two Australians will lead a full Cycle. Soprano Lise Lindstrom will appear as Brünnhilde in the first two cycles while German tenor Stefan Vinke will perform his signature, world-renowned role, Siegfried.

David Livermore’s production of Verdi’s “Aida” returns with Lorenco Passerini conducting. Natalie Aroyan, Diego Torre, Michael Honeyman, Alexander Vinogradov, and Elena Gabouri star.

Performance Dates: Dec. 6-20, 2023

National Tour 2023

The company is set to go on a tour with Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” directed by Priscilla Jackman. The opera will travel across New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, and Western Australia.
