Victorian Opera in Australia is set to present “Voss” for the first time in 30 years.

The showcase is set to take place on August 4, 2021 at the Palais Theatre; the opera, written by composer Richard Meale and librettist David Malouf, will be presented in association with Australian National Academy of Music.

The opera is based on Patrick White’s famed 1957 novel, which focuses on German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and his journey across Australia. Audiences will get a chance to see baritone Samuel Dundas as Voss with Emma Pearson as Laura.

“Voss explores the many layered notions of Australian identity, which have grown and changed substantially since its premiere in 1986,” said Artistic Director Director Richard Mills, who will be one of the major creative forces behind the project. “The opera is a major work of the Australian imagination, whose richness makes possible many opportunities for rediscovery and re-appraisal.

“The opera invokes the uniqueness of our country, and, in conclusion, offers the possibility of salvation through attention to the spirit of the land and its ancient lineage. The opera is of continuing relevance to the evolution of our national narrative.”
