Theater an der Wien has announced that it will shut down until Easter 2021.

The news comes as the Wiener Staatsoper and Oper Graz have already extended closures due to the Austrian federal government’s COVID-19 restrictions. The opera house said in a statement that it was forced to extend the shutdown due to the prolonged closure of the cultural sector, including the opera houses.

As a result of the shutdown, the production of Prokofiev’s “The Fiery Angel” will be recorded for TV and later DVD. “The Fiery Angel” is set to star Aušrinė Stundytė, Bo Skovhus, Natascha Petrinsky, Elena Zaremba, and Nikolai Schukoff. Constantin Trinks was signed on to conduct the production by Andrea Breth.

Austrian opera houses have been closed since early November 2020, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis. The Austrian government is trying to analyze the situation, given the rapid spread of the novel variants of coronavirus.
