The Philadelphia Orchestra has announced that Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan will narrate performances of Bernstein’s “Candide.”

The performances of Bernstein’s classic work will conclude the composer’s 100th-anniversary celebration and will be led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and a cast that includes Alek Shrader, Erin Morley, Denyce Graves, Kevin Vortmann, and Timothy McDevitt. Stage Director Kevin Newbury will set the production of Bernstein’s coming-of-age story in the early 1990s, unfolding in a high-school classroom and inspired by films such as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Dazed and Confused.”

The characters will be portrayed as the archetypes of early-1990s high-school life: Candide as the bookish nerd; Cunegonde as the ambitious head cheerleader; Paquette as the introverted goth; and Maximilian as the flamboyant drama club president. The setting will trace how these characters change from naïve teenagers to expectant graduates.

Cooper is a seven-time Oscar nominee who is best-known for his work in “A Star Is Born,” “American Sniper,” “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “The Place Beyond the Pines,” and “Avengers: Endgame.” He is also a Tony nominee for his work in “The Elephant Man.” on Broadway.

Mulligan is an Oscar nominee for “An Education” and has also been seen in “Wildlife,” “Mudbound,” “Suffragette,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Shame” “Never Let Me Go,” and “Pride & Prejudice.”

Performances are scheduled for June 20-22, 2019.
