The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) has extended the contract of Chorus Director Gregory Batsleer through August 2028.
Batsleer joined the ensemble in late 2009 and has helped transform the Chorus and overseen the expansion of the Young Singers’ Programme. He has also led the ensemble through its second BBC Proms appearance in 2023, regular broadcasts, and annual performances at the Edinburgh International Festival as part of Music Director Maxim Emelyanychev’s Mozart opera cycle.
“I am over the moon to be extending my relationship with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as Chorus Director,” said Batsleer, per an official press release. “Over the years, it has been a joy to see the SCO Chorus become part of the very fabric of this great organization — artistically, emotionally, and culturally. The choir’s journey has been one of deep collaboration and creative ambition, and I am thrilled to continue shaping its future.”
In addition to his SCO role, Batsleer serves as Festival Director of the London Handel Festival, Artistic Director of the Huddersfield Choral Society, and has previously led the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Chorus. He has guest-conducted leading UK ensembles, including the Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and National Youth Choir of Great Britain, and co-founded Festival Voices. He is also a former Artistic Director of the National Portrait Gallery’s Choir in Residence program.
