2 Operas To See This Weekend – North America (8/24-26)

Berkshire Festival Opens Its Hotly Anticipated ‘Rigoletto’

By David Salazar

There are still a ton of operas to see this weekend at Glimmerglass, Santa Fe, and the Seattle Opera. We have featured those in previous weekend editions. As for new productions, there are really only two major showcases taking place.

And here they are.

Rigoletto – Berkshire Festival

Jonathan Tetelman, the breakout star of the recent “La Bohème “ at the Tanglewood Festival stars as the Duke of Mantua alongside Sebastian Catana and Maria Valdes, as Rigoletto and Gilda, respectively. Joseph Barron and Maya Lahyani also star as Sparafucile and Maddalena. Jonathan Loy directs while Brian Garman conducts. It’s pretty much THE opera event of the weekend, at a festival that has garnered strong reviews over the past seasons. The first performance of the Verdi masterwork is set for Saturday afternoon.

Sacred & Profane Sacred & Profane: Songs & Ephemera of Mozart & Salieri – Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble

As the company closes down its season, it showcases one final program of songs from both Mozart and Salieri. Matthew Iacozza, Dante Olivia Smith, and Claire Townsend lead the performance as the Scenic Designer, Lighting Designer, and Costume Designer, respectively.
