This weekend will showcase a world premiere, a highly anticipated new production,  a classic revival, a visiting opera company and the continuation of Wagner’s tetralogy. Here is a look at what OperaWire recommends this weekend.

Berénice – Opéra National de Paris, France

Barbara Hannigan creates the role of Berénice in Michale Jarrell’s new work. The work also stars Bo Skovhus, Alastair Miles, and Ivan Ludlow in a production by Claus Guth. Music director Philippe Jordan conducts the production, which has received rave reviews.

Luisa Miller – Staatsoper Hamburg, Germany

Nino Machaidze returns to her signature Verdi role. The soprano is joined by Joseph Calleja, Vitalij Kowaljow, and Roberto Frontali. Alexander Joel conducts Andreas Homoki’s production, which Machadize premiered in 2014.

Ernani – Teatro alla Scala, Italy

Ailyn Perez makes her role debut as Elvira in a new production of Verdi’s early masterwork. Francesco Meli sings his signature role while Ildar Abdrazakov and Luca Salsi round out the star-studded cast. Ádám Fischer conducts the new production by Sven-Eric Bechtolf.

Prince Igor – Royal Opera Muscat, Oman

Valery Gergiev leads the Mariinsky Theatre in a classic production from the company and an all Russian cast. The opera marks the first of the season for the theater, which is set to feature numerous classic gems.

Siegfried – Royal Opera House, United Kingdom

The Royal Opera House continues its Ring Cycle with Sir. Antonio Pappano conducting. Nina Stemme headlines the production with Stefan Vinke in the title role. Gerhard Siegel, Johannes Martin Kränzle, and Brindley Sherratt also star in the epic work.
