Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend (4/20-22): Corinne Winters, Eric Cutler & Ramon Vargas Lead Weekend

This weekend will see three Verdi masterpieces performed around the world and one of Wagner’s most popular works in a new production. There will also be a performance of Shostakovich’s greatest opera. Take a look at what OperaWire thinks you should see this weekend.

La Traviata – Opera Australia, Australia 

In Melbourne, Corinne Winters takes on her signature role of Violetta alongside Yosep Kang and José Carbó. Carlo Montanaro conducts Elijah Moshinsky’s classic production.

Lohengrin – La Monnaie du Mont, Belgium 

Eric Cutler and Bryan Register alternate this weekend in the title role of Wagner’s “Lohengrin.” The two will be joined by Ingela Brimberg and Meagan Miller alternating Elsa. Alain Altinoglu conducts Oliver Py’s new production.

I Lombardi – Teatro Regio di Torino, Italy

Angela Meade leads an exceptional cast in Verdi’s “I Lombardi” with Francesco Meli and conductor Michele Mariotti. The new production by the Teatro Regio di Torino will also showcase an alternate cast this weekend which includes Maria Billeri and Giuseppe Gipali.

I Masnadieri – Opera Monte Carlo, Monaco

Ramón Vargas leads the cast in Verdi’s rarely-performed work which is also set to star Roberta Mantenga and Nicola Alaimo. Daniele Callegari conducts the Leo Muscato’s production.

Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk – Royal Opera House, United Kingdom 

Antonio Pappano leads Shostakovich’s masterpiece with Eva-Maria Westbroek and Brandon Jovanovich in the lead roles. John Tomlinson and John Daszak also star in Richard Jones’ acclaimed production.
