By Francisco Salazar

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has reported that its stream of Verdi and Boito’s “Otello,” presented on Nov. 30, was viewed by 70,000 on Rai 1.

The opera starred Fabio Sartori, Marina Rebeka, and Luca Salsi in a new production by Valerio Binasco. Zubin Mehta conducted the opera which also starred Riccardo Della Sciucca as Cassio, Caterina Piva as Emilia, and Alessio Cacciamani as Lodovico. Claudia De Toma directed the televised performance.

The opera is currently available on Rai Play for those who missed the stream.

The “Otello” stream represented the only performance of the opera this season from the company; the Verdi masterpiece was performed without an audience. The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino expects to reopen its theater for audiences this December and is currently preparing a production of “Linda di Chamonix” starring Jessica Pratt.
