Kyle Albertson Makes Heroic Role Debut At The Dallas Symphony

By Francisco Salazar

On Friday May 18, 2018, Kyle Albertson replaced Matthias Goerne in a highly anticipated performance of Wagner’s “Die Walküre.”

The bass-baritone, who is currently covering the role of Wotan at the San Francisco Opera, agreed to perform on a short notice. However, Goerne canceled six hours before the performance prompting the Dallas Symphony to scramble for a replacement. As a result, Kyle Albertson got a call from his agent and went straight to the airport in San Francisco. He booked his flight on his way to the airport and consulted the assistant conductor in the car on the way to the venue. Albertson would arrive only seven minutes before the second act.

The result was rave reviews with the Dallas News noting “Albertson gave his considerable all, even dramatizing his performance to gripping effect. Between him and Heidi Melton’s Brünnhilde, I can’t recall the opera’s final parting of father and daughter so emotionally intense.”

Albertson next performs with the San Diego Opera in “Rigoletto” and in Arizona Opera’s “Silent Night.”
