The San Diego Opera will close its 2017-2018 mainstage season with Daniel Catán’s “Florencia en el Amazonas.”

The opera, loosely based on Gabriel García Márquez’s novel, “Love in the Time of Cholera,” opens on March 17, 2018, is set to star Elaine Alvarez in the title role in her company debut. OperaWire recently got an opportunity to interview the soprano; keep an eye out for the full details of our conversation in coming weeks.

She will be joined by Maria Fernanda Castillo also in her Company debut, Daniel Montenegro, who makes a welcome return after having last been heard as Luis in “El Pasado Nunca se Termina,” and Luis Alejandro Orozco, who also makes his company debut.

Other stars making their company debuts include Adriana Zabala and  Levi Hernandez as Paula’s lover Alvaro while Hector Vásquez rounds out the cast. Maestro Joseph Mechavich conducts the soaring score with stage director and choreographer Candice Evans directing the production, which was originally conceived for Indiana University.

The opera runs through March 25, 2018, and will also have a radio broadcast on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 8 PM on KPBS radio, 89.5 FM (97.7 FM Calexico) and online at www.kpbs.org.
