CD / DVD Releases – Week of Sept. 9

Dmitri Hvorostovsky & Jonas Kaufmann Lead New Releases

As the holiday season approaches, a number of new releases will be available this week. Last week we saw the releases of new albums by Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, and the world premiere recording of Anton Rubenstein’s “Moses” and this week’s offerings include an homage to Dmitri Hvorostovsky, a new release for Jonas Kaufmann, a new collaboration between two major companies, as well as numerous acclaimed productions from last season. Here is a look.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky 

In honor of the late baritone, Orfeo is releasing historical recordings of Hvorostovsky at the Vienna State Opera. The CD is set to feature music from some of his acclaimed interpretations including “Eugene Onegin,” “Simon Boccanegra,” “I Puritani,” “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” “Don Carlo,” “Pique Dame,” “Un Ballo in Maschera” and “La Traviata,” among other operas.

Jonas Kaufmann in Waldebuhne 

Sony Classical will release the acclaimed tenor’s latest open-air concert which also featured Anita Rachvelshvili. The concert will be released on both CD and DVD and featured the music of Mascagni, Tosti, Leoncavallo, and Puccini among others.

Semiramide

Opera Rara and Warner Classics join forces for the first time with a new release of Rossini’s major opera with Albina Shagimuratova and Daniela Barcellona in starring roles. Sir Mark Elder conducts.

Bach 

Benjamin Appl releases his latest album for Sony Classical featuring the music Bach. The Concerto Koln accompanies the baritone in an album which features renowned arias from the Baroque master.

Giovanna d’Arco

Ramón Tebar conducts this acclaimed production from the Verdi Festival at the Teatro Farnese. Vittoria Yeo takes on the title role in Verdi’s early masterwork with Vittorio Vitelli as Giacomo and Luciano Ganci as Carlo VII. Peter Greenaway directs the visual production and C major releases the new DVD. 

Billy Budd

Deborah Warner’s Opera Award-winning production gets a release on Bel Air. The production from the Teatro Real stars Jacques Imbrailo, Toby Spence, and Brindley Sherratt. Ivor Bolton conducts the celebrated production.

Agrippina 

Daniele De Niese, Patricia Bardon, and Jake Arditti star in Robert Carsen’s latest production from the Theater an der Wien. Thomas Hengelbrook conducts Handel’s masterwork in this Naxos release.
