Edita Gruberova, Kevin Short & Leonie Rysanek Lead New Releases

This week get will see two classic performances released as well as a rarely performed opera get a new DVD. There will also be a solo album by one of today’s rising bass-baritones. Here is a look at what’s in store.

Cendrillon

Naxos is releasing a new version of Massenet’s rarely performed work from the Theater Freiberg. Kim-Lillian Strebel takes on the leading role with Anat Czarny as Prince Charming. Fabrice Bollon conducts the delight score.

Der Fliegende Holländer

Orfeo releases a historic performance of Wagner’s early work with Leonie Rysanek, George London, and Wolfgang Sawallisch. The recording comes from a historic performance from the Bayreuth festival in 1959.

Lucia di Lammermoor 

Edita Gruberova’s historic 1978 performance of Donizetti’s masterpiece will also hit stores. Orfeo releases the recording from the Vienna State Opera, which also stars Peter Dvorsky, Mateo Manguerra, and Thomas Moser. Giuseppe Patané conducts the performance.

Mephistopheles and Other Bad Guys

Kevin Short releases his album featuring music from “Faust,” “Mefistofele,” “La Damnation de Faust,” “Das Rheingold,” and “Robert le Diable” among others. Lawrence Foster conducts the recording with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille.
