Breaking Down the Operalia 2017 Semifinalists By the Numbers

The Operalia Competition has announced the semifinalists for its 2017 edition.

The announcement was made Tuesday after two days of quarter-finalists that saw a whopping 40 participants whittled down to 25 participants. They include, tenor Seungju Bahg, soprano Vlada Borovko, tenor Marco Ciaponi, bass Emanuele Cordaro, countertenor Rupert Enticknap, tenor Davide Giusti, soprano Elena Guseva, mezzo-soprano Nozomi Kato, baritone Leon Kim, soprano Ruslana Koval, soprano Sooyeon Lee, baritone Stanislav Li, tenor Mihail Mihaylov, soprano Damiana Mizzi, soprano Kristina Mkhitaryan, soprano Maria Mudryak, baritone Emmett O’Hanlon, soprano So Young Park, bass-baritone Boris Prýgl, soprano Oksana Sekerina, tenor Levy Sekgapane, mezzo-soprano Victoria Yarovaya, soprano Adela Zaharia, soprano Joanna Zawartko, and baritone Rassul Zharmagambetov.

For those keeping count, that breaks down to 11 sopranos, five tenors, one bass, one bass-baritone, and five baritones total. Additionally, three natives of Kazakhstan made it through to the next round as well.

In the Zarzuela competition, the semifinalists include Bahg, Ciaponi, Giusti, Kim, Lee, Li, Mizzi, Mudryak, Park, Sekgapane, and Zaharia.

The semi-final takes place on Wednesday with the final taking place this weekend.
