Bertrand De Billy & Marco Armiliato To Replace James Levine

The Metropolitan Opera has announced replacements for James Levine for “Luisa Miller” and “Il Trovatore.”

Macro Armiliato will lead performances of “Il Trovatore” starring Maria Agresta as Leonora, Yonghoon Lee as Manrico, and Anita Rachvelishvili as Azucena. Quinn Kelsey and Luca Salsi will share the role of Count di Luna, with Štefan Kocán and Kwangchul Youn both singing the role of Ferrando. Performances are scheduled for Jan. 22, 26, 30, Feb 3 (matinee), 6, 9, 12 and 15, 2018.

Armiliato has conducted “Trovatore” at the Met on previous occasions and most recently led the work in 2015 with Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Later in 2018, he leads three Puccini operas at the Met including “La Bohème,” “Madama Butterfly” and “Turandot.”

Meanwhile, Bertrand de Billy will conduct “Luisa Miller” which is set to star Sonya Yoncheva, Piotr Beczala and Placido Domingo. Performances are scheduled for March 29, April 2, 6, 9, 14, 18 and 21.

This season de Billy is also set to conduct “Tosca” with Anna Netrebko and Marcelo Alvarez. Additionally, De Billy will conduct “Tosca” and “Luisa Miller” on the same day on April 21. The French conductor is also set to lead performances of “Cendrillon” with Joyce Didonato, Alice Coote, Kathleen Kim and Stephanie Blythe.
