Artist Of The Week: Rihab Chaieb

By Francisco Salazar

It has been quite a year for Rihab Chaieb. The mezzo-soprano ended her  time at the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Artist program and won third place at the Operalia Competition. She also made several role debuts and also appeared in the Live in HD performance of “Luisa Miller.” Now she takes on a new title role in a rarely performed work.

Chaieb will headline a new production of Offenbach’s “Fantasio,” a rarely performed comic opera that has seen a renaissance in the past year at the Opéra de Montpelier. The new production will give the mezzo a chance to show her comic timing and her vocal fireworks. This will also be her first title role since winning the Operalia Competition.

If you are unable to attend the performances of this Offenbach work, Chaieb will return to the Met for one performance of “Don Giovanni” and will also star in the world premiere of “Phoenix” at the Houston Grand Opera. She also sings in a production of “Le Nozze di Figaro” at the Cincinnati Opera.

Recordings

While there are no commerical CDs of Chaieb, she was featured on the Metropolitan Opera’s HD of “Luisa Miller.”

Here she is performing an aria from “Roméo et Juliette” at the Neue Stimmen competition.
