Xabier Anduaga, Francesco Meli, Lawrence Brownlee & Saioa Hernández Lead Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s 2021-22 Season

Italy’s Teatro dell’Opera di Roma has announced the 2021-22 season featuring world premieres, rarely staged works, and star singers. Here is a look at the operatic performances of the season.

Pre-Opening

Before opening night, the fall season will see Verdi’s “Giovanna d’Arco.” The work will be presented for the first time in Rome since 1972 and will be directed by Davide Livermore. Nino Machaidze will take on the title role alongside Francesco Meli, Roberto Frontali, and Dmitry Beloselskiy. Daniele Gatti conducts the opera.

Performance Dates: Oct. 17-26, 2021

The Season 

The new season will open with a world premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s “Julius Caesar.” Robert Carsen will direct the new work with Daniele Gatti conducting the commissioned work. Clive Bayley sings the title role with Elliot Madore and Julian Hubbard as Brutus e Cassius.

Performance Dates: Nov. 20-28, 2021

Puccini’s “Tosca” returns to the stage with Alessandro Talevi’s reconstructed production. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts the work with Saioa Hernández making her company role in the title role. Roberto Frontali and Vittorio Grigolo round out the cast.

Performance Dates: Dec. 4-12, 2021 & Nov. 2-5, 2022

Janáček’s “Kát’a Kabanová” will make its Teatro Costanzi premiere in Richard Jones’ Olivier Award-winning production. David Robertson conducts the masterpiece with Corinne Winters singing the title role and a cast that includes Charles Workman, Carolyn Sproule, Susan Bickley, and Julian Hubbard.

Performance Dates: Jan. 18-27, 2022

Robert Mantegna sings the title role of Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” in a new production by Damiano Michieletto. Michele Mariotti conducts the work which is also set to star Michele Pertusi, Antonio Poli, Daniela Barcellona, Marco Spotti, and Amartuvshin Enkhbat.

Performance Dates: Feb. 8-17, 2022

Oksana Dyka and Ewa Vesin share the title role of Puccini’s “Turandot” in a  new production by Ai Weiwei, which will mark the acclaimed director’s theatrical debut. Oksana Lyniv conducts the work which also stars Bryan Hymel and Arsen Soghomonian as Calaf, Francesca Dotto and Adriana Ferfecka as Liu, and Marco Spotti and Antonio di Matteo as Timur.

Performance Dates: March 22-31, 2022

Andrea De Rosa directs a new production of Bellini’s “I Puritani” with Roberto Abbado conducting. Jessica Pratt sings Elvira with Lawrence Brownlee and Francesco Demuro as Arturo, Franco Vassallo as Riccardo, and Nicola Ulivieri as Giorgio.

Performance Dates: April 19-30, 2022

Francesco Meli brings his signature Ernani to Verdi’s early work alongside Luca Micheletti, Evgeny Stavinsky, and Angela Meade. Marco Armiliato conducts the production by Hugo de Ana.

Performance Dates: June 3-11, 2022

The final opera of the season will be Gluck’s “Alceste” in a production by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Marina Viotti, Luca Tittoto, and Patrik Reiter lead the cast with Gianluca Capuano conducting.

Performance Dates: Oct. 4-13, 2022

Alternative Opera

Bach’s “La Passione” will be performed in a production by Romeo Castellucci with James Conlon conducting soloists Charles Workman, Krzystof Bączyk, Maria Grazia Schiavo, Veronica Marini, Vivien Shotwell, and Krystian Adam.

Performance Date: April 10, 2022

The Teatro Nazionale will present “Acquaprofonda,” a contemporary opera by Giovanni Sollima and Giancarlo De Cataldo. The children’s work will be directed by Luis Ernesto Doñas and will star young artists Agnieszka Jadwiga Grochala, Irene Savignano, Rodrigo Ortiz, Alessandro Della Morte, and Arturo Espinosa.

Performance Dates: Dec. 3-7, 2021

Casta Diva” will be dedicated to showcasing archives of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma through artwork.

Performance Dates: April 22-24, 2022

Filmed Opera 

Following the success of the filmed “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” and “La Traviata,” Mario Martone will direct a filmed version of “La bohème” with Michele Mariotti conducting.

OperaCamion

Puccini’s “Tosca” will be performed at the piazze di Roma and del Lazio as part of the company’s truck opera. Gianluigi Toccafondo and Fabio Cherstich will direct.

Summer Season at Terme di Caracalla

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma will return to the Terme di Caracalla following two seasons at the Circo Massimo.

The season will open with Bernstein’s “Mass” directed by Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Diego Matheuz.

Performance Dates: July 1-5, 2022

Veronica Simeoni, Saimir Pirgu, Erwin Schrott, and Mariangela Sicilia star in Bizet’s “Carmen” with Bertrand de Billy conducting Valentina Carrasco’s production.

Performance Dates: July 15-August 4, 2022

The second opera will be Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” diretced by Lorenzo Mariani. Stefano Montanari conducts a cast that includes Davide Luciano, Xabier Anduaga, Cecilia Molinari, Alex Esposito, and Marco Filippo Romano.
