The Wiener Staatsoper has announced that it will stream Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” on June 27, 2025.

The production by Vera Nemirova will be conducted by Timur Zangiev and will star Anna Netrebko in her role debut as Lisa. She will be accompanied by Yusif Eyvazov in his signature role as Hermann.

The cast will also include Alexey Markov as Tomski and Pluto, Boris Pinkhasovich as Yeletsky, Elena Zaremba as the Countess, and Elena Maximova as Polina and Daphnis.

The Wiener Staatsoper’s production sets the action in the period shortly after the fall of communism in the 1990s. Nemirova wanted to portray a social backdrop in which, on the one hand, immense wealth lies behind baroque facades in Russia, and on the other, the misery of the poor: casinos next to soup kitchens, homeless people and street children next to the nouveau richer.

“The Queen of Spades opens on June 21 and runs through June 30. All four performances are sold out.
