White Snakes Project to Speak Against Anti-Asian Racism with ‘Fractured Mosaics’

By Logan Martell

On March 30, 2023, Cerise Jacobs and White Snake Projects will present the world premiere of “Fractured Mosaics,” an operatic response to anti-Asian racism.

Comprised of four scenes, “Fractured Mosaics” features music by Nilo Alcala, Randall Eng, Benjamin Kono, and Liliya Ugay, with texts from their respective writing partners, Deepalis Gupta, Monique Truong, Cerise Lim Jacobs, and Sokunthary Svay.

Per an official press statement, “The story concerns Simon, a young medical student of Filipino descent who meets his biological mother for the first time and bonds with her over a home-made bottle of banana ketchup, the quintessential Filipino condiment.”

The opera will be presented in three online performances made possible by WSP’s Tutti Remote plug-in which allows live, synchronous performance from remote locations online.

The four-member cast is comprised of soprano Angela Yam, mezzo Chihiro Asano, tenor Ziwen Xiang, and baritone Junhan Choi, led by Music Director Tian Hui Ng and Stage Director Laine Rettmer. Projections were designed by Pamela Hersch. There will be a talkback with singers and creative team following each performance
