By Francisco Salazar

The Washington National Opera is set to present Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” for the first time in 30 years.

The company will revive Robert Carsen’s classic production, originally created for the Metropolitan Opera.

In the lead roles, the company has lined up two Bolshoi Opera singers. In the title role, baritone Igor Golovatenko will make his American and WNO debut and Anna Nechaeva will sing Tatiana.

Rounding out the cast will be Alexey Dolgov as Lensky, Eric Halfvarson as Prince Gremin and Elena Zaremba as Madame Larina.

In his WNO debut, American conductor Robert Trevino is set to lead the WNO Orchestra while Peter McClintock, an assistant director at the Met for more than 30 years, will direct the production. The creative team will feature set and costume designer Michael Levine (WNO debut), lighting designer Christine Binder, choreographer Serge Bennathan (WNO debut), and hair and make-up designer David Zimmerman.

Performances are set to run from March 9–29, 2019.
