Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation Announces NYC Events to Celebrate Legendary Soprano’s Met Opera Debut 75 Years Ago

The Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation will celebrate the legendary soprano’s 75 anniversary of her Metropolitan Opera debut with a series of events.

On Feb. 24 at 6 p.m., the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation will officially launch its American Friends initiative at the Tagore Gallery in New York, establishing a philanthropic network of American patrons to support the Foundation’s mission of preserving and promoting the soprano’s legacy. The American Friends will be chaired by gallerist Kelly Tagore.

The evening will feature a recital by mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera, accompanied by guitarist Federico Díaz, alongside a small exhibition of the soprano’s gowns in dialogue with digital artwork by Alba G. Corral inspired by de los Ángeles’s recordings of traditional Catalan song. There will also be  a screening of “Brava, Victòria!” will also be presented.

Then on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m., the Juilliard School will host the culminating recital of the second edition of the Victoria de los Ángeles Legacy program, an initiative dedicated to preserving and disseminating the Spanish and Catalan song repertoire that de los Ángeles championed throughout her career. Titled “A Spanish Liederabend,” this year’s program centers on the poetry of Federico García Lorca. The recital will be available via free livestream.

The partnership between the Foundation and Juilliard has already generated meaningful artistic exchange, including the participation of Juilliard soprano Dalila Lugo in Barcelona’s LIFE Victoria Lied series, and a visit by Juilliard’s artistic director of vocal studies Brian Zeger to meet with students of the ESMUC’s Victoria de los Ángeles Lied Master’s program.
