By David Salazar

The Vancouver Opera, in collaboration with Pacific Opera Victoria and composer Maxime Goulet will be presenting “The Flight of the Hummingbird” on May 19, 2020.

The 45-minute chamber opera is based on the book by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and focuses on the challenges of climate change. In the story, animals in a forest come together to save their home from a raging fire.

The opera was originally to be toured around British Columbia, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, over half of the 120-concert tour was never completed.

The opera can be viewed here starting at 10 a.m. PT. It will be available for repeat viewings throughout the summer.

Goulet has composed several works including “Symphony Chocolates” and “On Halloween Night;” she has also scored over 30 video games including “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “Iron Man 2.” The composer is also developing a project known as “Micro Météo,” a series of 30-second long poems that will be sung by Jean-Michel Richer with pianist Christian Girard.
