Valery Gergiev Sanctioned by Canada

By Francisco Salazar

Valery Gergiev has been sanctioned by the government of Canada.

Following the G7 summit in Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new round of sanctions targeting Russia and included 70 individuals and entities, as well as more than 200 vessels that have been transporting Russian oil.

Among them was Gergiev, who serves in Vladimir Putin’s government and has been a loyal supporter of the Russian dictator.

When the War in Ukraine started, Gergiev was fired from all his Western contracts with the Munich Philharmonic, Verbier Festival, and Rotterdam Orchestra. Several of his concerts were canceled at the Teatro alla Scala and Carnegie Hall, among many others. He has since become the General Manager of the Bolshoi Theatre and has conducted in Iran and China. Gergiev is reportedly set to make a comeback to Spain next season.
