Richmond Symphony has announced that Italian conductor Valentina Peleggi will serve as their next Music Director, effective July 1, 2020. Peleggi will be the sixth Music Director in the company’s history, as well as the first woman to occupy the role.

Peleggi has worked with such organizations as the OSESP Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra, the English National Opera, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Gotenburg Opera Orchestra, BBC Singers, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, among others.

In the 2020-21 season, Peleggi is scheduled to conduct eight weeks of concerts, including the Symphony’s season opening festival, four Masterworks concerts, and more.

“Within hours of Ms. Peleggi’s first interaction with the Symphony, members of the search committee knew she was very special, and by the time of her Masterworks concerts, there was unanimous agreement that she was ‘the one,'” Elisabeth Wollon, leader of the company search committee to find a new Music Director, stated in a press release. “We have brought some wonderful and charismatic conductors to the stage this season, but Ms. Peleggi stands out as a superb and passionate leader who brings to the orchestra a remarkable depth of musicianship, a charming connection with audiences, and a deep respect for the RSO’s commitment to this community.  She is inspiring!  We cannot wait to welcome her to Richmond.”
