Utopia Opera & Forbear! Theatre to Present ‘The Mikado’

By David Salazar

Utopia Opera and London’s Forbear! Theatre are set to present a new staging of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” at Hunter College’s Ida K. Lang Recital Hall on Oct. 3–5, 2025.

The production will be directed by Forbear!’s Rachel Gianesse Middle, with music direction by Utopia Opera founder William Remmers. Middle sets the work in a magic realm of elves, satyrs, and anthropomorphic creatures.

The production recently toured the UK  and was called a “5-star triumph” by London Theatre 1 and “brilliant subversive” by Everything Theatre.

“A recent London audience member called our ‘Mikado’ the ‘best show [she had] ever seen,'” added Remmers in an official press release. “It seems unfair that a New York audience should be robbed of the chance to see this ‘Mikado,’ particularly when tasteful and ethical, musically pristine and choreographically joyous, and anarchically unhinged productions of this beautiful piece are in short supply; the reasons for this are understandable, but not inevitable.”
